How much carbon heating the house saves
94%less carbon from heating the house than it would cause uninsulated and on gas.
Carbon advice is noisy. We started with the biggest thing in an old house: the heating.
Insulated walls, roof and floors: the house needs about 60% less heat. The heat pump turns one unit of electricity into 4.9 of heat, measured over two winters.
A heat pump does best with lukewarm water, and lukewarm water needs a big radiator. The biggest one is the floor, so ours runs at about 33°C. More in the story of the house.
About 0.3 tonnes of CO2e a year instead of 5.3.
The heat pump's side is measured. The uninsulated house is calculated from the same walls, roof and floors. Carbon figures: UK government, 2026.
